Meeting at Mangaone

A public meeting of ratepayers in No 5 ward of the Manchester Koad District was held at the Mangaouo school house : on Saturday evening last, and was well attended. Mr W. G. Pearce was voted to the chair, and after reading from the Star the notice calling the meeting, he briefly explained its object, which was principally to consider who was the best man to elect as member of the Board for No. 5 ward, and accordingly to take steps to have him nominated. He then called on those present to express their views on the subject. Mr Shortfall thought they would all agree with him that they had lost all confidence in their present representative, Mr Bull (hear! hear!), and they should at once take steps to elect one in his stead who would seek the interests and have the confidence of the ratepayers. He did not think there was a more suitable person for the position than Mr Walter G. Pearce, the chairman of that jieeting, and he had therefore great pleasure in proposing that he be selected for nomination as warden for No. 5 ward. This was seconded by Mr W. H. Fletcher. Mr Garlick proposed, and Mr Joseph Bray seconded, That Mr W. H. Fletcher be nominated. On the motions being put to the meeting, a majority of two hands were held up in favor of Mr Pearce. Mr Pleasants asked all those who had voted for Mr Fletcher at that meeting to vote for Mr Pearce on election day, and let it be seen in that part of the ward, at any rate, they were unanimous. (Applause.) Several others spoke to the effect that it was understood whoever was selected at that meeting would have their votes. Mr Fletcher proposed, and Mr Neikon seconded, That this meeting pledges itself to support the candidature oi Mr Pearce. This was carried unanimously. Mr Pearce heartily thanked his fellow ratepayers for the confidence they had expressed in him. He then gave a few particulars with reference to the financial position of the ward, which he thought was not altogether satisfactory, and might be remedied. In reply to questions, Mr Pearce thought al the unmade roads in the ward should be formed as soon as possible out of the loan, and he should support this if elected. They ought to wait till the south side of the line was declared a road before doing anything to it. One of the first things he would do, if they elected him, would be to take steps to have Mr Bull's motion at the last meeting of the Board, that no roads in that ward be done out of ; the loan, rescinded. (Hear I Hear I) He did not think it possible to reduce the general rate in view of the present financial position and the maintenance work required, though he was in favor of such a course as soon as it was practicable. Mr Neilson proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, and the latter proposed a -similar compliment to the representative of the Feilding Star for attending the meeting. Both motions were carried with acclamation and this terminated the meeting.
