An ambitious scheme is now under the consideration of the Waitemata Naval Artillery Volunteers. It is proposed to purchase a trading schooner of 80 or 40 tons, and fit her out as a cruising gunboat. The funeral ot the late Captain Russell took place at Woodville on Wednesday. The Manchester Bifles paraded, for drill and inspection last night. Captain Pleasants in command. Sergeant-Major McMillan instructed the corps in the new' dril. Information having been received that the expenses of taking the men to. the Easter Encampment had been much, reduced, it was decided to go to Nelson, and twenty-five officers and men gave in their names. The corps will parade on Thursday the 18th instant, at 5.80 p.m. at the railway station. : '
