O.Lethbridge; said the only opposition to be raised to the proposal was a matter of economy." At Marten two councillors -were appointed at stated intervals of time j who supervised all public works most efficiently; therefore he did not see why the ' same' plan /could not be followed out by the FeSding. Council and thereby save the j .- extra expense. He furthnr remarked that he questioned whether the Municipal Corporations Act gave the Council power ; to make such an appointment without ■ inviting tenders for the position by advertisement. „;..; Or Fowies spoke to the same effect. Or J. C. Thompson said "he had all the moria' pleasure in- Supporting the motion because Mr J3UI was an bld.and tried servant, .whose remuneration was- fßir from tt»k»g eqaal toithe value of his services. - j , Cr Goodbebere would oppose the pro- i po;aitiou- because, the Oouncfl could not! afforddti ; the present Mayor took i oifice,v when there was a great cry about retrenchment and reducing the Overdraft, the (kpuicU was v .being continually laden | with new?HabUities in tiie shape of-pound-keeper, ranger, and renting paddocks. If the Council .wanted an engineep fenders should'- be invited from outsiders. He; thought i iidea, about two i CoiincJOors ■acting. as soperintendants of works a^gbod'one. Cr.Haysittle could riot support the motion. Bfe did nofe- pretend to say Mr Hi&'wjWJ bvjet ' pjijd, but if the present salary wasibb sitfrtll Mr Hill knew what he could do. Now the. Council was asked :to:pay the same work.. . Cr Goodbehere said another objection he had to the Town Clerk being Engineer was that' he would thereby be absent from his office, and thua cause inoonvenience to the raj^payera. The Mayor- replied to the charges of extiavagenoe. braught by Gr Goodbeher», item by item, and steted the appointments in connection wijh the Pound would be a source of prpfi^instead of expense.
