Wellington Land Board

The usual monthly meeting of the Land Board was held in the Board's office yesterday inuruing, there being present — Messrs Marchant (commissioner), Fitzherbert, McArdle, Bunny, and Mcarthur, M.H.K, A scheme of sections comprising about 3000 acres ia the Pohangina district, which it is proposed to offer for Sale, was submitted by the Commissioner. (Mr W. A. Marchant) and j approved. Mr Maoarthur briefly explained his proposals for the capitalization of special settlements, but it was decided on the motion of Mr Bunny, to defer discussion on the scheme until next tneetiug, and in the meantime Mr Macarthur will forward his views in writing to the Commissioner, who will forward a copy to each member of the .Board. -.of A suggestion was made by Mr H. at the meeting of the Land Board that the Board should consider the tidvisnbleaess of disposing of their sooiions l.y auction. The €ouimiissiouer (Mr J. W. A. Mar«httui) said he would oppose "any such proposal, as it would enable capitalists to outbid poorer men when the laud -was offered for sale. Mr Bunny pointed out that the Manawatu Railway Company sold their land to the iignest bidder, and so far as he could hear there were no complaints that the poorer people were prevented from •buying. Mr Marchaut did not think there was any comparison between the cases of the Company and the Board and he felt luite convinced that poorer tn-n wuuld be prevented from puichus« ibk the lauu. Eveutually Mr Bunny gave notice that he would move that the matter should be disscused at next meeting.
