News from Noumea : — The local eteamer Caledonian war ship was wrecked in a hurricane, one passenger being drowned The Majura, which left Newcastle in January with coal for Noumea, is believed to have foundered with all hands.

A Kanaka has been arrested for the murder of Captain Kane and three men belonging to the Beche-de mer boat Wild Duck, twelve months ago. He confessed that the black crew decided to murder the •whites and did so with tomahawks. They then seized the vessel, but afterwards abandoned her.
Melbourne, March 25. 150 men struck work at the Phoeuix foundry, Ballarat, for higher wages. Since December, 2225 cases of typhoid fever were reported in Melbourne and suburbs, of which 246 proved fatal.

The British India Company's steamer Buncorra, laden with coal, Singapore, ran ashore on Angelica reef, near Batavia. She was towed off, but has not since been reported, and it is feared she foundered.
