Auckland, VI arch 10. The st earner Wainui, which arrived to-day from Fiji, brings the following; item of intelligence from Eambi with regard to the effect of the recent hurricane. It shows the results to>
have beep most disastrous : — The cocoanut plantations which had only just recovered from the hurricane of 1 886, have been so severely damaged that there is little hope of a crop for another three years. The damage done at Eambi in the two hurricanes is estimated at £5000. The loss of bananas on Kewa appears ...to be greater than was at first anticipated. The la c flood has destroyed all those planted along the banks of the river, while one plantation on the Waimana has had about half the cultivation completely submerged. The natives do not appear to be taking any active steps as yet to clear away the debris left by the flood, and the neglected look of some of their plantations i^/ very characteristic.
