Robert Dennis, proprietor of the Court Society Review, sued Mr J. Henmker Heaton, M.P. for Canterbury, for £500. The claim was for writing speeches, articles in the National Review and letters to The Times and to the PostmasterGeneral from 1885 to 1888 for the defendant. The plaintiff also claimed for writing the statement made by Mr Heaton before the Colonial Conference on postal matters. The action has been settled out of Court, the defendant paying £400, and £200 costs.
The society paper Truth characterises the Melbourne Exhibition as a financial disaster unequalled in the history of exhibitions.

It is understood m official circles that Prince Bismarck is ae^eable to England becoming the manda tj power at Samoa. Madame Melba, the Australian vocalist, has been engaged for a season of Italian Opera at Drury Lane.
The Prince of Wales presided at the Imperial Institute banquet, held last night, at which 300 were present. In proposing the toast, " Prosperity to the Institute," the Prince of Wales said he regretted that the want of time and opportunity prevented him visiting Australia.
In the House of Commons the Right Hon. John George Shaw Lefevre has given notice of his intention to ask Mr W. H. Smith, leader of the House whether the refusal of the Queensland Government to contribute towards the cost of the Australian squadron releases the other colonies from their engagements or whether England will bear Queensland's proportion.
The Times referring to the Special Commission, declares it awaits with perfect confidence the result of the impartial and thorough enquiry into the connection of Parnelhsßi with crime.
In the House of Commons this evening the bill introduced by Mr Parnell, providing for mitigation of the treatment of political prisoners, was rejected by a majority of sixty six. At a public meeting held m London for the purpose of protesting against the treatment of Irish political prisoners, a message was received from Mr Gladstone declaring that he would unflinchingly probe to the bottom the connection of the Government with the Times-Parnell Commission. Berlin. March 13. Germany will be represented at the Samoan Conference by Yon Beacham. Washington. March 13 Admiral Porter, in the course of an interview, advocated attacking Germany in consequence of the recent events in Samoa, and retaliating on the Samoans for their treatment of American subjects. The publication of the Admiral's views has created a sensation here. Paris, March 14. The Comptor d'Escompte and the Copper Syndicate are recovering from the effects of the panic caused by the suicide of the manager of the former. Vienna, March 14 The Austrian Government has stationed a corps of observation on the Servian frontier. Twenty thousand men are ready to march at half a days' notice. PbeTOhia, March 14. The presidents of the Transval and Orange Fr je State Republics have agreed to contract a defensive alliance in the event of unjust wars being levied on either State.

Viscount Mori was assassinated on February 1 1 by a fanatical religionist, who plunged a knife into his abdomen because the Viscount entered the shrine without removir g his boots.
The treaty recently concluded between China and Portugal was brought to an issue by China threatening to blockade Macao unless Portugal accepted it. The treaty virtually places Macao at the disposal of the Chinese Customs authorities.
By a fire at Pekin Palace, damage was done estimated to reach three million taels.
During the riots at Chin Kiang the house 3of the British Consul and two clergymen and the Baptist Consul were burned. The Methodist Chapel,
American Consulate and Customs House were partially destroyed.
