The Feilding Star 'THURSDAY, MARCH 7, 1889. Acclimatisation Society

A meeting of members and others interested in the Manchester and Kiwitea Acclimatisation Society will be held here on Saturday night for the purpose of electing officers for the ensuing year, and doing other general business incidental to the Society. Since its formation this Society has been able to achieve an immense amount of really useful work, notwithstanding the fact that the means at its disposal have been reduced to a minimum by the Government having removed the protection from hares as game. A most efficient fish hatchery has been erected at Aorangi, and the rivers and streams have been well stocked with trout ; therefore the licenses for fishing and shooting, with the annual subscriptions of members, should supply revenue sufficient to meet any current liabilities, as well as to provide for those inevitable contingencies which are certain to arise. We would urge upon all real sportsmen, and followers of the " gentle craft," to attend the meeting on Saturday, because, although the Society may truly be denominated a success, yet a little more life infused into it would do no harm. There are certain privileges, or extensions of existing rights, required to be obtained from the Government in connection with the dates of the commencement and ending of the seasons ; and it will also be discussed whether gun licenses should not be substituted for the ordinary games licenses, either to put down poachers, or to make them pay the same as the legitimate sportsmen. The principal object in the meantime is to extend the operations of the Society by increased membership, and we hope the invitation of the Secretary, which appears in another page, will be cordially responded to by those interested, either directly or indirectly.
