THE READING ROOM.

TO THK EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sib, — I wish you to call attention to the following circumstances : —It is understood that every frequenter of the Public Beading Room (excepting visitors passing throngh the town) shall pay a subscription of Is per quarter towards the support of the institution. Now one or two persons (residents) are in ths habit of regularly making use of the room without paying this nominal fee. I should not complain so much were it not that one of these, who has apparently little else to do, spends a considerable time in the room, both during the day and in the evening, reading, or pretending to read, certain papers, and actually assuming a monopoly in so doing, to the great inconvenience and annoyance of regular subscribers. One of the latter, not myself, went into the room several times one afternoon this week on purpose to see a certain paper, but could not because it was every time in the hands of this non-subscriber. What I say is, let all pay or none ; but I consider it consummate meana ness on the part of the person particularly referred to, and I hereby give him this hint, that if he persists in it I will write again on the subject, when I will mention him by name and attach my own also. But I trust there will be no necessity for this but that hewilljeither become a subscriber like a man, or leave off availing himself of a gratuitous luxury, or that the Library committee will do something towards averting the evil complained of. — I am, &c, A Subscriber.
