Te Kooti's Visit to Poverty Bay

Mr Mitchelson yesterday telegraphed to Mr Bush, R.M., at Tauranga, inotructing him to follow Te Kooti and deliver a message strongly urginghim to return and not proceed to Poverty Bay. Te Kooti told Mr Bush that he was getting old and strongly wished to see his friends before he died. He added he was like the master of a vessel who looked out for breakers before crossing the ; bar, and if there was too heavy a sea he would turn back... This, .interpreted, means, -if strongly opposed, he will turn back rather than.risk . only a breach of the peace. , .■- ■. Government have reeeived a number of telegrams from leading men in: Poverty Bay, pressing for. arms and ammunition to be sent up, and ball cartridges issued to the Volunteers. They have declined to take any such steps, and have informed the senders that they look to them to aid in repressing the excitement and nut encouraging it.
