Feilding Star. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1889. Trade Morahty
The following telegram from Christchurch shows that " trade morality" is of the same calibre ail over the colony ; and at the same time offers : ample proof of the wisdom of the Government in appointing Mr Khannon as customs inspector. Not only is that gentleman exposing present attempts at fraud, but the knowledge that they will be found out and pun- ! ished, will have the effect of terrifying " the trade " into compulsory honesty in the future as far as customs duties ' are concerned : — " One of the cases seized by the Cus- . Toms at Mr Shannon's instance was found ■ to contain velveteens, whereas the contents were invoiced cotton corduroys, . which are duty free. The consignee, on discovering the error in the invoice, endeavored to arrange for the payment of the correct duty. Unfortunately the case had already been seized. Two cases belonging to a Dunedin firm, with a branch establishment in Christchurch, out of a •consignment of 260, were also impounded, one containing white shirts, which are subject to a duty of 25 per cent., invoiced as " whites," and passed as buttons, shirt and tailors' buttons, these being duty free. ; This is stated to have occurred through a misunderstanding. In the second case, > passed as containing tailors' trimmings, ' was found a quantity of bright lustres suitable for coat trimmings, and dutiable to to extent of 20 per cent.
