Our Wellington Letter
Wellington, Febrnarj 14. Some anxiety is felt as to the whereabouts of the yacht " Sappho," a small vessel of 10 tons, which left here for D'Urville Island with thirty men on board, a week ago, but has not been heard of since. The men were to be employed grass cutting. Among the passengers was Mr W. J. Hunt, of Samoan celebrity. The vessel was in command of Mr Taylor, the well known oarsman and boatbuUcler of this city. According to the Times, when the electric light and destructor are in going order the Empire City is to be known as " the city of Bweetness and light." This will be a great contrast to the present state of things. Tenders are being called for the construction of the " Queen's drive," which was decided upon in honour of the Queen's jubilee. The drive is to join the Evan's Bay road, and will run round Lyall and Island Bay, thus making a pretty seaside sketch. This decision has not been arrived at any too early, for Wellington has been notorious for its neglect of these necessaries in the past. No doubt, the fact that our new Governor is very fond of driving with his four in hand, will have the effect of hurrying the work on. Our present popular Governor seems to prefer a hearty gallop on horseback along the sands to lying in state in his carriage. The first of the "double deckers" ordered by the Tram Company is now running in the streets, and is already classed as "first favorite," especially by the college boys.
