The Manchester Rifles paraded for drill and inspection last night. There was a good attendance of officers and men. At the conclusion of drill Captain Fleasants informed the company that he had received a challenge from ex-volunteers resident in town to fire a match on a date yet to be decided. The challenge was, of course, accepted, and Lieutenant Chamberlain, Color- Sergeant Bilderbeck, and Volunteer Humphries appointed a match committee to make all necessary arrangements.
The corps will learn with regret that Acting-Lieutenant Chamberlain has sent in his resignation as a member. This is owing to pressure of business requiring the whole of his attention. In losing Mr Chamberlain the corps will be deprived of the services of a promising young officer.
At Foster's Hotel, Wanganui, on Thursday night there was a good attendance of members of )he West Coast Rifle Association, Major Neill in the chair. It was decided (says the Herald) to hold the meeting on the 2lßt and 22nd of February, and a committee was appointed to select a Buitable range. The programme will be submitted at next meeting, to be held on the 24th.
