The Drought in Australia
"By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright JPER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION, f Sydney. January 13. The drought still continues. At Guuncdah Station, on ihe Nauio! Kiver, stock are dying in large numbers. At Taree, -in the Macquarie •district, feed and water are becoming scarce. Welcome rain has fallen in the Wilcannia district, permitting *toek to travel for the first time in •three months. January 14. Intense heat is being experienced all over New South Wales, the thermometer ranging from 105 to 124 in the shade. Crops at Gulgong have l«en abandoned. Bush fires have done much damage at Carcoar, where the the grass has been mostly destroyed. A water famine is raging in Walgett district. The dams are drying up, unless rain falls within three ■weeks tho consequences will be terrible, both to man and beast, A man was found dead on the Boorooma Station. He evidently succumbed to thirst. Received January 15, 1 p.m. Sydney, This Day. A huge heat wave has swept over this colony since Tbursday, the thermometer having averaged 102 in the shade in Sydney. A slight rain is now falling in Sydney and the southern districts.
