An unoccupied shop and dwelling-house, owned by Peter McAlinden, was burned down at 2.30 this morning. It is not known whether it is insured. The origin is a mystery. Dunedin, January 14. Beresford is scratched for the Cup, and Ruesley and Caxton for the Publicans' Handicap. Mr D. M. Stuart, solicitor, son of the Rev Dr Stuart, died on Saturday after-, uoou, after a prolonged illness. Wanganui, January 14 Phil Robinson lectured here to-night to a fairly sized audience, who were very attentive and appreciative. A trap accident occurred on Saturday, by which Messrs "W. Alexander and James Thain had a very narrow escape. Both were severely shaken and each got his nose broken, but are now recovering satisfactorily. Pang*o was brought up to-day, and charged with the murder of William Kells, at Waitotara. He was remanded till Friday. Auckland, January 14. The statistics of the Crown Lands Office give the following figures showing the amount of land taken up under the various systems for the quarters named : — March, 1888 — 48 holdings were taken up, comprising 8421 acres ,* cash receipts, £1111. June— l 29 holdings, 16,000 acres ; cash receipts, £3040. September — 93 holdings, 8250 acres ; cash receipts, £3012. December~l7B holdings, 19,673 acres ; cash receipts, £5620.
