It will be observed by our report of the proceedings at the special meeting of the Board held on Thursday afternoon., it has been decided—in accordance with the request of a deputation of ratepayers of No 5 ward, which waited oa the Board —not to go on with the work of making the Feilding - Bunnythorpe and Stoney Creek road, but to take the necessary steps to raise aloan to make the whole of the unmade roads in No 5 ward. Although this new departure may, for the tini*., thw art tiha Lopes of those settlers who were to have bene» fitted by the works proposed to be done, and which the Board stood pledged to do, yet it may be the best after all. The money will be obtained at a cheaper rate and its repayment will be made in terms of the Loans to Local Bodies Act, wiu'ch are already well known to the ratepayers. The one danger to be dreaded is that "Dog in the manger" policy which has so long obtained in No 5 ward, to the detriment of the progress of ithat otherwie c prosperous ipoirfeion of the Board's district. Our advice is for the electors to sink all private -feelings, for the nonce, and join together in working for the common good. There has been too little unanimity among them in the past for them to accomplish anything, and the lessons taught them by bitter experience of failure should bear good fruit when the polling for the proposed loan is taken. We will have more to say on this subject after we have seen the schedule of works.
