The news that Germany had lost several men in the recent fight at Samoa created a painful sensation, in this city. The press, in referring to the difficulty in Samoa, express a hope that America will end her intrigues, and facilitate a settlement by admitting the great preponderance of the German commercial interests in the islands. It also urges Prince Bismarck to make serious and energetio representations at Washington on the subject. January 9. The German officials accuse the U.S. Consul at Samoa, and Captain Leary, of the U.S. warship Adams, of instigating the recent rising at Samoa by supplying Mataafa with rifles. The steamer Richmond was delayed yesterday in order to take a despatch from the German Consul-General of Australia to Samoa, and despatched a cable (urgent) in cipher after consultation with the authorities at Berlin.
