"Freeze Out"
— w A meeting was held on Thursday evening of the Feilding Public Library Committee, when the subject of the Heading Boom was fully discussed. It was shown by the Treasurer that the expenditure was far beyond the receipts, and it would be absolutely necessary for a policy of vigorous retrenchment to be adopted. The cause of this necessity lay in the fact that many persons, using the Reading Boom, who had promised contributions of one shilling per quarter each, had failed to keep up their payments. Buch being the case it was out of the question that the present cost of maintenance be kept up. It was decided not to do anything definite until at the January meeting of the Committee, and with that view, and to give defaulters another chance the following reßolu tion was passed: — "That unless the voluntary contributions to the Heading Room are paid to the full amount guaranteed by the subscribers, journals and periodicals equal in cost to tbe deficiency, be discontinued." This practical course ought to have the desired effect of "freezing out " those who v object ou principle " to pay for the use of the room, but who do not object to enjoy luxuries at the expense of other people. As the New Assembly Rooms are now ready for the purpose, we understand the Secretary of the Library Committee has been requested to invite Mr Edwahd Wakefield, of Wellington, to deliver a lecture for the benefit of the Library Funds. As Mr Wakefeild is probably the best and most polished speaker, as well as the most charming lecturer in the Colony, it is a " consummation devoutly to be wished" that he will accede to the request.
