♦ The shows in the new Assembly Rooms during the Christmas and New Year holidays promises to be very attractive. The new rules of the Feilding Boxing Day Sports contain the only clear definition of "walking" yet published in the colony. A section of the midland railway from Brunnerton to Nelson Creek, a distance of about nine miles, has been certified as ready for traffic. A very hard gale of wind blew last night, and the rainfall was very heavy occasionally. The storm continued to-day with very little abatement. Mr John Bartholomew and Mr Alfred Eade went to Turakina yesterday to assist at the performance of a Service of Song, to take place there last night. The final heat of the aquatic tournament was rowed at Brisbane on Tuesday, and resulted as follows: — Searle, 1; Kemp, 2 ; Matterson, 8. Beach did not row, in accordance with his announced intention. Searle won by eight lengths, Matterson a bad third. Time, 18min 39£ sec. The survey ot the West Waitapu block will be commenced -forthwith by Mr C. A. Mountfort, authorised surveyor, who has been instructed to undertake the work by the Government. We are glad to know i that there is every likelihood of the survey \ being conducted witb tbe utmost despatch.
