The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, DEC. 8, 1888. Borough Affairs
_ ♦■ . Ofr readers will be pleased to learn, from our report of the proceedings of the meeting of the Borough Council held on Thursday night, that some action is about to be taken in the
direction of haying a permanent bridge put across the Kiwitea stream. Councillor Lethbridqe has suggested that a sum of money be borrowed, under the Government Ljans to Local Bodies Act, sufficient fW that purpose, and for erecting muuieipul buildings, tv include also the Public Library. It will be remembered some months ago Councillor Haybittlk made proposals to much the same effect; but they were allowed to stand over until a iiiure favorable time. We believe that time has now arrived, and that the ratepayers, as a whole, have at last made up their minds that the works proposed are absolutely neces aary to keep pace with the times. Farmers in the Manchester, Harbor Board, and Kiwitea Blocks, as well as those moie recently settled on the Small Farm Blocks, are compelled to use the Kimboiton road to get in with their produce for sale, and take out supplies purchased in the town, aud they have an undeniable right to demand that the road should be made passable in all weathers. We believe the Council are prepared to pull together in getting this work done, and we feel convinced the ratepayers will do their best to assist them. As to the proposed municipal building, we think the importance of the Borough now demands it. We hope that the Council will proceed to take all the necessary steps with as little delay as possible, in order that the proposed bridge may be completed before next winter. The building is not of quite so much consequence.
