Newspaper Law of Libel Bill
We are indebted to an English paper for this following information : — " The, Bill for amending the law of libel, bo as to lighten certain grievances which press hard upon conductors and proprietors of newspapers, under the present law, has passed through the committee stage in the House of Commons without material alteration. The third reading is, of course, assured, and no opposition to the measure need be feared from *he House of Lords. Newspapers will under the new legislative enactment, be privileged to publish without risk, speeches delivered at lawfully convened public meetings, so long as no malicious motive can be proved for the publication. Newspapers will also have relief in other ways ; while at the same time we believe there will be no inconvenience or injury to the public. A few of the clauses of the Bill were stoutly opposed by some of the lawyers in the House.
