The Earl of Lonsdale, who left on a bear shooting aud naturalising expedition to the Arctic region in February last, was met at Hudson's Bay by bear trappers, who report that he was in company with two Esquimaux near the Arctic circle in September last. Lord Lonsdale, who had walked throughout the whole expedition, was theu pushing forward to the North Pole. The Esquimaux regarded the Earl as a marvel of endurance. The trappers report that Lord Lonsdale had met with an accident, and the sm«ll bone of his arm was fractured. Some alarm is felt for his safety, as no tidings have been received since the trapper's report. The announcement that General Sir EL W. Norman, Governor of Jamaica, had been selected as Governor of Queensland, was received in tne House of Commons with cheers. In the House of Commons Sir Jas. Ferguson, Political Secretary of the Foreign Office. Stated that the troops at Suakim were acting simply on the defensive. The resolutions passed by the Victorian Legislature with reference to the appointment of colonial Governors was received with cheers on being read ia the House of Commons to-day. M. de Lesseps appeals to Frenchmen to prevent the Panama Canal falling into the hands of foreigners. From his seat in the House of Commons to-day, Lord Randolph Churchill protested against the despatch of British troops to Suakim, and also to Great Britain meddling in the Soudan affairs. Mr J. Morley's motion condemning the action of the Government in connection with Suakim vu lost on division, by 35. The Germans have commenced the blockade by bombarding Liudi, on the Southern Coast. Madame Boulanger has retired into a convent. Her husband is seeking to compel her to acquiesce in a divorce. Sir H. A. Blake, in a letter to the press, refutes the assumption that the Irish population in the colonies is displaying factions opposition to the tiovernors because they are nominated by the Imperial authorities. He considers it unjust to stigmatise the Irish of the | colonies ai disloyal to the British Government. CixetXTTA. December 1. Lord Duffenu, the Viceroy of India, addressing a meeting here to-day, deprecated the autocracy of India, and said the question of an elective government was premature. He advocated the increase of nutives in the public service. Oaibo, November 30. Extensive preparations are being made for a decisive campaign in the Soudan. M. de Freycmet, French Minister of War, will ask the Chamber of Deputies to vote an immediate war - credit of 400,000,000 francs.
