The Drought in Australia

Large bush fires near town havfr enveloped the whole place with smoke,, and vessels bound for Port Jackson have been unable to make th» land. The weather is very hot, snd several cases of persons struck down with sunstroke are reported. One case to-day resulted fatally. At Hay (New South Wales) the* temperature has reached 104 in the shade, and six deaths hare occurred from heat in the last two days. J_h* whole country is a mass of fires. In some of the inland towns the smokft is so thick that tbe sun has not been seen for days. The heat in Melbourne on Saturday was 101 in the shade. Two deaths are reported from suastroke at Hotham. Excessive heat was experienced on Saturday in Adelaide. The glass was 105 in the shade. A water famine at Charters Towers is expected. The schools will all be closed in consequence. Distressing accounts of the drought reach the city ' from the country districts. Melboubnjb.
