Some Political Pleasantries

The country is in the midst of an electioneering campaign, which promises to be one of the most closelycontested that has ever been witnessed in the United states. The selection of a Republican or Democratic Preaident hinges upon the State of New York, which ia claimed by both sides.. At the initial proceedings in San Francisco, when citizens were elected for the purpose of nominating a Re publican ticket for Municipal offices, scenes of violence, blackguardism, and murder were rife. The Democratic ruffians visited many of the polling places, and by force stole and smashed the ballot-boxes, tearing up and burning the ballots. Several shooting scrapes occurred, but fortunately with no ill-result until evening when a Democratic office-holder visited the Republican headquarters, firing fire shots, which killed one man and seriously wounded two others. The murderer himself received two bullet wounds, but was unfortunately not killed. He is now out ou bail, as the Coroner's jury failed to accuse anybody of the murder of the victim. One of the Inspectors of election had a lamp smashed over his head because he protected his ballot-box, the burning oil pouring all over him and in* flic ting most severe injuries. If the concluding elections are conducted in a similar manner there will be some lively proceedings to record.
