M. Cecil Raikes, Postmaster- General, stated in the House of Commons that Government is ready to commence a fourpenny postage rate on Ist January if the colonies will agree to a uniform reduced rate by direct sea service.-.. A large proportion of the growing wheat has been cut for hay, which is commanding an unusually high price. A large deposit of salt has been found at Ellalong, 120 miles north of Sydney. The Legislative Assembly are discussing the Premier's motion relative to the appointment of Governors. The speeches so far, have been remarkable for their nationalistic tendencies — more so then has ever been heard in an Australian Parliament before. It is believed that the motion will be almost unanimously carried. Meiboubne, November 21. The Intercolonial Temperance Convention has opened its sittings here. Sir William Fox and other representatives from New Zealand are present. The Presbyterian Assembly has at length agreed upon a basis of federation for the churches of the different colonies. They have invited some prominent English and Scottish divines—Lord Poleswortb, Hon. W. H. Smith, M.P, and Sir G. Campbell, M.P.— to attend the jubilee celebration of the church.
