Queensland Govenorship Trouble

JtJy Electric Telegraph. — Copyright LPSB UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.] London, November 17. Sir H A Blake, who wn.s selected as Governor of Queensland, has intimated his willingness to retire from the position but Lord Knutsford objects. The Times admits that it is impolitic to defy local opinion The Economist Hays Queenshind, on reflection, will not ri-k a dangerous separation for the sake of the Irish, and Sir Thomas Mcllwraith is attempting to reduce the colonies to the position ot allies. Referring to ths subject of the Queens land Governorship, the Observer says the objections rai-ed by Mr Mcllwraitli to i he appointment of Sir H. A. Blake are frivolous, and that the Government of the colony is ashamed to admit the real objection, which is that the appointment is unpopular with the Irish settlers in the colony. The Daily Newt thinks there is con* siderable weight in Lord JELnutsford's arguments. A Colonial Government ruent which was able to choose its Go vernor would possess an unfair advantage over its successors. The example, however, of Clifford Lloyd might have warned Lord Knutsford against pitch forking Irish coercionista into Colonial vacancies. November 19. Lord Carnarvon, in a letter to The Times, says that Sir T. Illwraith'i obje( • tions to Sir H. Blake are expressed in rough, ill-considered language, which is perhaps due to the self-asserting tone common in young communities. It woutd be impossible to admit his claim to havp the name of the new Governor submitted without abandoning the rights now belonging to the Crown. The submission of the name to the colony really means the appointment of a Governor by a party majority: It is Lord Knutsford's duty to appoint the best man possible. iVJ r Pritchard Morgan, the new member for Merthyr-Tydvil, has requested the Government to fix a special day for discussing the Queensland Governorship in the House ot Commons.
