After a slight delay at the post the flag fell to a good start, Tradition on the out* side being first to move, and Melos the last. As the field swept past the stand Spade Guinea had charge of affairs, but she was soon dispossessed of her advantage by Melos, their closest attendants being Newmaster, Mentor, Bravo, Dick Swiveller, and "Whakawai. When hardly half a mile from home Ensign had fallen back, having met with the accident above mentioned (sic), and Cyclops took command of the field. As they neared the straight Bravo closed on the leader, and was the first round the turn, followed by Cyclops, vVhakawai, Mentor, The Yeoman, and Tradition. Much the same order .was preserved until half a furlong from the winning post, when Mentor went up with a rush and secured the lead, both Tradition and The Yeoman at the same time passing Bravo, Cyclops, and Whakawai. Mentor won by a length and a half from Tradition, who was a length in front of The Yeoman. Then followed Cyclops, Whakawai, Bravo, Australian Peer, and Recall, in the older named. Time, 3min 30f sec. Mr Donald Wallace, owner of Mentor, wins about £14,000 by his horse's •victory. Cyclops bolted near the abattoirs' during the Cap race. Ptdnet, November 6. Outside of New South Wales the win of Mentor in the Melbourne Cup is very popular. His victory is a bad one for the bookmakers, as the horse had been backed for a heap of money. Accklakd, November 6. The victory of Mentor in the Melbourne Cup proved profitable to a few small punters here, but had Carbine won the Derby on Saturday, the ring would have had to pay away a good sum on the double, these horses beine steadily backed in company. The best horse in the Cup for the Auckland public was the locally-owned Whakawai, who was well supported down to 4tbi:
