Cardinal Newman, who has been suffering from general debility for some time past, fell and struck his head severely, and it is feared he will not recover. Melboubne, November 1. The Chamber of Commerce Conferference, at a meeting to-day, passed a resolution supporting the i'acific cable project. They also resolved to ask the various colonial Governments to introduce uniform legislation at the first opportunity in their respective Parliaments dealing with the Trade Marks aud Patent Laws, and to suggest that such proposed legislation shall be on the lines of the Imperial Acts.

At the adjourned meeting of the conference to-day between the masters aud the delegates from the miners, a draft agreement was arvauged, which will now be sub aitted to fclie men for approval.
Heavy rains have fallen in the southern parts of the. colouy and far inland in the duration ut Altmry.
