Volunteer Items

The Manchester Kiffeff will parade for inspection on Friday the 16th of Noy ember for muster parade 1 when all arms and accoutrements on issue to members, must be jproduced for examination by the inspecting officer. The corps will also assemble for judging distance practice on Friday the 23rd idem on Kimboito-u road. It ifr understood that fines will be inflicted on all cate» of absence from either parade.

Pursuant to notice the Manchester Rifles met last night for the purposeof electing a Captain in place of Captain Macarthur, who- had resigned. Lieut. Kirton presided. He read a letter from the Officer Commanding the* district, and the advertisement calling: the meeting, and invited the men to* nominate a candidate.

Proposed by Sergt. W. Chamber' lain, seconded by Yol, J. Hensony That Lieut. 0. Pleasants be elected Captain of the company.— -Carried. In honor of the newly-elected Cap^ tain the corps presented arms-. Capt. Pleasauts thanked the men; for the honor they had conferred upon him, and in a neat little speech pointed out how much depended onr the men, as well as the officers, to make the= company smart and efficient.

Three hearty cheers were the* given* for Capt. Pleasants, and another for Lieut. Kirton. The tatterthen vacated} the office of president, which was then filled by Capt. Pleasants, who said it was now necessarj for the corps tc elect a Lieutenant to fill the vacancy made by his election, which gave* Lieut. Kirton a step. The officers took no part in the election, but left it entirely in the hands of the noncommissioned officers and men. Corp, Gosling was elected chairman, and Vol. Pleasants secretary. Three candidates were nominated, viz- : Sergt, W. E, Chamberlain — proposed and seconded by Sergt. Fowles and VoL Humphries; Sergt. Henson— proposed} and seconded by Yols. Milson and! .Robinson ; Sergt. Fowles — proposed and seconded by Sergts. Chamberlain* and Daw. A ballot was taken, and Sergt. Fowles was last on the list. Asecond ballot resulted : — Chamberlain,. 13; Henson, 11. The latter then? retired, and Sergt. Chamberlain was* elected Lieutenant unanimously. The following gentlemen were elected honorary members : — Capt. D. IL Macarthur and Yol. Q. E. Little.

Oapt. Fleasants said there would be* an examination of candidates for the position of corporal on the first parade held in December, and Vols. Milson r A. G. Collins, and E. M. Keid offered themselves. After some useful drill the parade was dismissed.
