The Registrar-General has directed attention to the fact that no fewer than seven deaths deaths from cancer and nine from consumption occurred in the four chief towns of New Zealand during 1 the month of September, both being a very large increase on previous months.
The Eailway revenue for the first 24 weeks of the current financial year is L 438,278 as against L 458,358 for the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of more than £20,000. The expenditure for tbe like term was, however, but £300,656 as compared with £327,955, a decrease of over £27,000, so the net profit this year is larger so far by £7000 than in the corresponding 24 weeks of the 1887. The details of traffic show a f alling-off in passengers, parcels, and live stock, but an increase in goods, chiefly in grain and minerals.
