The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1888. The Horticultural Society

The fact of the Secretary of the Feildt ing Horticultural Society having called a public meeting for Friday next, with a view, we understood, of holding the usual Spring Show early in December, will be pleasing intelligence not only to intending exhibitors, but to the public at large. We hope that considerable interest will be taken on this occasion because at no time in the history of the settlement has there been such a promise of excellence and beauty in the growth of flowers, shrubs, as well as vegetables of all kinds. Such being the case it would be a great pity if the opportunity were allowed to pass oE showing what we can produce, and of giving outsiders a chance of competing against our local men. The new theatre will probably be completed in time for the show to be held in it, so that the accommodation, as regards a suitable room, will be unsurpassed in any other part of the coast. We urge upon everyone who has a real and honest desire to promote the welfare of the place to put in an appearance on Friday, because it is— or ought to be — a patent fact that nothing speaks so much in favor of a district and its people, as the success of local inptitutions of this kind. The Horticultural Shows held here in past years, have invariably '

been noted for the quality and quantity of the exhibits, and, most important of all, their financial success. The only fault ever found has been that the work was thrust on too few real workers, and consequently a gx>d deal had to be left undone which might have ueen done profitably if there had been more hands to do it. We hope, therefore, to see new energy thrown into the thing, and that new settlers who have arrived recently will come forward and do their part in the good work.
