Obscene Language
TO THE BDITOH OF THE BTAR.
Sib, — Will you kindly inform me if the law permits of the birch being administered to persons using obscene* language ? I could not help thinkingwhen reading the reports of the cases^ against Robinson and Lowe, that agreat hardship had been inflicted on the parents of these lads, especially the first mentioned, whose mother is a hard working struggling widow, wha has had more than her share of domestic troubles in the past. She wilt have to work many weeks to make ur> the amount ef the fine. I ask — What is 12 hours of incarceration to such, hardened natures? I think a littlo mild punishment, say two dozen with a pliable supplejack, would act as a deterrent in the future.— l am, &c.^
Observer. [The law only allows imprisonment with hard labor for obscenity. We* think the idea of the- supplejack good as regards young lads, but it would have its inconveniences ia the cases of grown men. — Ed. F.S.}
