Grain, Wool, and Meat Markets
PRICES FIRMLY MAINTAINED. By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. (PER UNITKD PRESS ASSOCI 4f10N.) London. September 27. Three thousand nine hundred quarters of Adelaide wheat (October shipment) have been sold at 40s 9d. The latest quotations for wheat are : — Australian, ex warehouse, 41s to 41s 6d ; off-coast cargoes are steady from 38s 6d to 395; New Zealand longberried, 41s 6d to 425. New Zealand hemp, £26 15s to £27. Gold to the value of a million and a half has been withdrawn for South America. The present series of wool sales will close on the 1 lth of October. At today's sales 12,000 bales were sold. The bidding was spirited and the demand stronger. Tallow—Best mutton, 27s to 27s 6d. Hides, 4d to 4£d. The following are the latest frozen meat quotations : — New South Wales meat, 4& d ; New Zealand meat, s|d. Tallow — Best mutton, 28s 6d ; best beef, 278 9d. Received October 2, noon. New Yohk, October 1. The wheat market has been cornered by a Chicago syndicate, and corn is now selling at two dollars per bushel. It is believed the operators will make a profit of three million dollars. Several failures have been caused already.
