In consequence of an overdraft of £600 the Benevolent Society have had to apply to the Government for aid, the chairman stating that people had come to him for bread and he bad to refuse. The Government are considering whether the society shall be allowed to draw sufficient money to carry on until the rates on country districts, which had »e< fused- to pay levy could be raised through the Property Tar Department. ; Auckland, September 21. A meeting of the shareholders of the North New Zpaland Woollen Company was held to-day, to consider the financial position of that body. It was announced that the Bunk of New South Wales had made a demand for the payment of £16,413 to be Jpaid oti or before the Ist of October. It was resolved, "That ax the Company cannot, by reason of it* liabilities, continue, it would be wound up." The meeting then adjourned until Monday. 1 At the resident Magistrate's Court to» day, Garrett Bros., bootmakers, sued A.
