Serious Riot at Newcastle

THE POLICE TO MAINTAIN ORDER. By Electric Telegraph.— rOopyright. (FEB UNITED PRI- 88 ASSOCIATION.) Sydnet, September 19. A serious riot took place at New Lampton mine, Newcastle, yesterday. A number of labourers who had beea engaged to put on coal were rushed by a mob of some thousand miners armed with sticks. The police attempted to protect the men, but were powerless, and violence was, only pre» vented by the surrender of the labourers, who undertook to' refrain from doing any more work. A force of permanent artillery, under ColVSpalding, with a Nordenfeldt gun, was despatched to the scene /from Sydney, but the men bad dispersed before its arrival. In consequence of the miners' riot at Lambton mine, Newcastle, the Governor has issued a proclamation warning the miners that stringent measures will, be adopted by Government for the security of those engaged in lawful work.
