Acclimatisation Society.
c A meeting of gentlemen interested ii t- the Acclimatisation Society was liel< 6 on Saturday night in the offices of th< c Emigrant and Colonist's. Loau Corpor l " ation. Dr Johnston presided. A con '" siderable amount of correspondenc< c was considered and a quantity o: ■* routine business gone through whict '» was entirely of a formal character anc '* of no general interest to the puMic c The financial position of the Society '» was then considered. It was showr '1 that owing to the fact of hares last V season having been gazetted as nt " longer protected by the game laws, 11 the Society had not been able to issue 7 that number of licenses which was an--11 ticipated and in consequence the * rerenue, which had been already speni ? in stocking the Oroiia River witb 9 fish and in the erection oi'a fish hatoh--8 cry at Aorangi, had not been realised. ' This left a deficiency which would ? have to be made up, and it was sug- » gested that the Government be urged 1 by the whole of the Societies in the i Colony, to authorise the issue of gun 1 licenses at 10s per gun. This would * be a more prolific source of revenue 3 than the olu system which, eotnparaJ tively speaking, has been a failure. In the meantime, to meet current * liabilities, it was decided to appoint 1 Mr R. Logan as a collector to obtain 1 assistance to the local Society from the ' residents in the district. That a * hearty response will be made to this ' call, we have no doubt. The object r of the Society is to provide means of ' amusement to sportsmen and profit to r fishermen, by the protection of game on land, and stocking the rivers with fish. Nothing makes a place so popular as the latter sport, and where shooting will attract one visitor fish- . ing attract will twenty.
