MANAWATU v. WELLINGTON. The football match between Manawatu^nd Weliington, played at Palmersfemrwblb $asurday,; was. won by Wellington..; by. three*tries to nil. A large number of spectators witnessed the match; - The game'was^ery evenly contested-, great "surprise being .manifested at the good stand made by the local men. The superior condition of th"ef"^Mitprs you the match. v The: following ; team represented Mana-' watu :—Full-back:; Luxford; threequarters: Parr r Smith, and Jackson; forwards: E. Whisker and Oliphant (wings), Seeker (capt.),-Say well; G. Manning, Hedges, Han^a, MofJEa^t, and F. Jackson. lia'nawatu:; had slightly the best of the game in the first spell. The first, try jWas gained by Sjfcorey by'a flukey piece of play. Cooper had attempted tp.:pqt a goal. The ball passed over the post, and most of the players thought a goal' had been kicked, but the umpires ■decided against it. Meanwhile Storey ranin and touched down. Cockrofttook the kick, but made a very poor at* tempt. In the second spell the Wellington representatives pulled them* selves together, and played better. Towards the end of the spell Merlet, by a piece of bad play of one of the local backs, scored a second > try. Cockroft took the kick, which was again a failure. Just before time was called the ball, was passed to Cooper, who, by^a good run, managed to get get in close to the touchline. Eang took the kick, but failed to place a goal. The play of thevisitors was very disappointing, and the general' impression was that with a little practice together the local men could win.; The passing of the Wellington backs was very good,but .they hardly ever succeeded in getting away., For the visitors Cooper, Merlet, and Roberts among the backs, and Storey, Cockroft, and King among the: .forwards played the best, game,..while for the local team Parr. Smith, Jackson, and Henry (backs), and: Whisker, Oliphat, Saywell, and Seeker were the most conspicuous amonjf the forwards. The England-Hawkes Bay match was played at Napier on Saturday, and after^a.very evenly, contested game,;ended in a win for the Englishmen by three points to two/ The match between the; Englishmen and. Wairarapa; representatives, was. played at Mastertoh yesterday, and resulted in a win for jbheiprmerby five points to one. The Englishmen got £70 for the match. <-: :
