If a fresh instance were wanted of the lack of business principles in the management of the Government railways ( says the Wanganui Herald) it would be found j in the new diversion of the limber trade of this coast from Wanganui to Wfllint;ton. A few months back the G'>vom ment railway authorities would not yraut the least concession to enable M utawatu saw-millers to get their wliito nine orders for the Melbourne Exhibition io_ port at rates that would enable tln-in t«> couijn-te with the saw- millers of other parts of the country; but, fortunately for the trade, the Manawatu Company have made such concessions now as will enable them to do their trade by way of Wellington . This represents, of course, a loss to this port, but more than that — it is a direct loss to the Wancanui section of railway. If a private company can make a payable trade by reducing prices, the Government might take the same plan into consideration. By playing into the hands of private companies they are doing a large setioo of the community a grievous wrong.
