The Premier said he could give bo further information than this, that it was the intention of the Government to appoint the Railway Commission as. soon as possible, and would take all possible steps as soon as the session was over. Several other members spoke, and at 11 o'clock Mr Fulton' moved the adjournment of the debate, remarking that it was evident the Public Works Estimates would not be finished that night. ■ On division, the motion for adjournment of the debate was carried by 50^ to 18, and the debate was adjourned till next day, an amendment by Mr Seddon, fixing the adjournment at. " 7.30 the next night, being lost. August 24. Eeplying to Mr Butdnson, the Premier said the Government had sot yet had time to consider and report on> the Joshua Jones', of Mokau, case. On the motion to go into Committee of Supply, Mr Walker said he thought that after a few months' experience of Government finance it would be found no better than that of the last ten years, Dr Newman criticised the method of raising- the loan, and objected to the heavy charges for discount, brokerage, & c Mr Fnser said the Thames district had nothing to thank the .Government for. Mr Menteath gave it as his opinion that the policy of the Government had been as great a failure as Sir J. VogeFs. supply. Otago Central rote, of £40,000.— Mr Goldie moved to reduce the ra'e by £15.000; lost hy 41 to 21.. The remainder railway yotes were passed. "..--.. i Immigration, of £3000.— Vote passed. Public Works, £8500.— The Minister said the abolition ©f the Department would take place soon after the Houserose. - Votes were passed t— Railways, £7£« 000; roads, £1900; purchase of Native lands, £5571 ; loan expenses, £50.000 • Public Works Department, £12.000, wat agreed to ; votes under class 4to 8 wore agreed to.
