Over 100,000 acres ot grass have been burned, and a large number of sheep hare been destroyed At a conference of Protectionists to* day it was resolved to make Protection the question at the next election. Sir Henrj Park ex, in addressing a meeting at Singleton, regretted that there appeared to he every chance of a strike among coal miners, and he expressed the opinion that the error lay as much with the masters as the men. Bkisbank, August 23. Edward Maher, a contractor, at Gerald ton, left his home yesterday in company with two blacks. His bodj was dis« covered to day with the head almost hacked off.
