REPOKT OF SYDNEY MARKETS I We have to thank Mr Allen, thi Feildir.g agent of the N.Z.L. & and M A. Company for the following report : — I Butter (duty Id per lb). — Since last writing on the 10th instant, prices for really prime AI qualify butter have improved considerably owing to the proportionately small supplies to hand as compared with the bulk of the shipments, and to-day Is 7d to Is 8d could be readily obtained for the best N.Z. makes, our own best coast butter ruling as high as 2a 2d. Second quality descriptions have also improved in value somewhat but not to such an extent, Is to Is 3d being the ruling quotation as we write, with a fully stocked market. Pastry butter shews little alteration, the market continuing more than fully stocked. Cheese (duty 2d per lb).— We have but little to add to our remarks when writing by the " Waihora," the market still being very dull at up to 7d for best N.Z. makes. Bacon (duty 2d per lb) it is without any improvement, the quotations ruling for our own curings, viz., 4d to 6d completely shutting the N.Z. article out of the market for the time being. Wheat (free) is practically unaltered since last writing, little business passing under .this heading as far as the N.Z. article i» concerned. Wool (free). — There have been no sales in this market during the past week, and there is consequently no change to report. A cablegram published within the past few day 6 announces that a Bill to remove the duties on raw wool in the United States has been passed ia the lower House and has gone up to the upper House for confirmation. These duties have for so long past been an insuperable hindrance to the extension of the wool trade in this direction that this news, though somewhat unexpected, has naturally been hailed with great satisfaction by the entire community. We are advised by our Head Office that the third series of sales for the current year closed in London on 18th inst. The position of the Home market at the termination of these sales was more favourable in regard to superior qualities of Greasy, Scoured and Washed, prices for all of which showed an advance of from to Id per lb on rates current the close of the preceding series. Medium and inferior descriptions remained unchanged and coarse crossbred sorts, which elicited less competition than usual, declined in value to the extent of £d to Id per lb. The sales comprised 312,000 bales. 157.000 bales were taken for the Continent, and 3000 bales were secured for America, 20,000 bales were held over for future disposal.
