At the Police Court to-day a man named Harry Beadrood was fined £5 and costs for disturbing the Salvation Army service at Dairy Flat recently. Hastbbton, August 3. Tbe North Wairarapa Benevolent So« • ciety hare instracted their solicitor to take action in the Supreme Court to compel tbe District Aid Board to provide funds tor the relief of the distressed. The local trustees have incurred heavy liabilities, and as no money is forthcom* ing, storekeepers refuse further supplies. > Nelson. August 3. A telegram to the Nelson Evening Mail reports the death by drowning at Waitapu of Captain Edward Bobinson, formerly master of a vessel trading to that port. A boat was sent ashore from the steamer Lady Barkly with the pas* senders under his charge, when it capsized, and he was drowned. The others were saved. Wellington, August 3. Mr William Beetham, an old settler, died to-day, aged 79 years. He leaves a large grown»up family, one of whom is Mr George Beetham, the member for Masterton. As an artist, the late Mr Beetham had made his mark in the colony. The Customs returns to hand for the colony for last month give the revenue as L 94.619, as against L 96.707 for the corresponding month in 1887. Dunedin paid L 28.587 ; Auckland, L 16.472 ; Lyttelton and Christchurch, L 16.464 ; Wellington, L 15.87- The beer duty for last month was L 2960, as against L 3454 for July 1887- The returns to come are only minor ones, and will not largely in' crease the total. , This Day. At the E.M. ( Jourt this morning Van Quon, for keeping a gaming house, on which the police made a raid last Saturday, was fined £15 and costs.
