Public Library & Beading Room
We think it is a matter for congratulation that the public of Feilding, as represented by the Library Committee recently appointed, have determined to keep open the Beading Boom. Although there are certain, limited, restrictions as regards residents using the Koom, J et there are none whatever placed jn visitors. All that the local people are asked to do is to contribute a small sum, quarterly, towards the purchase of American and English journals, and defraying a proportion of the cost of salary of custodian, fire, rent, and lighting. Considering the advantages to be gained, no one is likely to object to this. We are aware an opinion obtains among a few to the effect that, as the burgesses have consented to a Library Bate, the Beading Boom is free. This is quite a mistake. Beading Booms were free only when Government subsidies were paid towards their maintenance. These subsidies having ceased the rooms are now practically without revenue, as the Library Bate may only be expended on the library or its contingent liabilities. This being the case, all the greater credit is reflected on those energetic individuals who have undertaken the cares and responsibilities of the management. We understand a supply of new books for the Library will be sent for by the next out-going English mail, and we would suggest that all subscriptions be sent in at once, so that a heavy bank draft may be remitted for their purchase.
