Sporting

The Rangitikei Hunt Club Steeplechase Meeting came off on Thursday, and was|a decided success. The attendance was above the average and in» eluded visitors from Wellington, Feildingand Wanganui. The sport was firstclass, most of the horses jumping splendidly. Large fields were the order of the day and in several of the events the finishes where very close. A good many spills occurred during the day, but no one was seriously hurt. Mr Sicely, the Secretary, was _iost assiduous in his efforts to make the gathering a success and was ably assisted by the stewards. The club worked their own totalisator and put through the sum of £360 which amount might have been doubled had the machine been in good working order. Details of the sport are under : —

Hack Hurdles, of 15 soys, 2 miles. — Forest Queen 1, Revoke 2. Riot and Cora also started. Won easy.

Hunt Club Steeplechase, about 4 miles. — Neck or Nothing 1, Doctor 2. Spartan and Lady Bell also started. Won by a head. Dividend, £7 13s.

Maiden Steeplechase, 10 soys, 2 miles. — Mistake 1, Piako 2, Lucy Glitters 3. Six others ran. Won easily. Dividend, £33 6s.

Ladies Bracelet, 2 miles. — Forest Queen 1, Spartan 2, Doctor 3. Lorraine also started. Won easily. Dividend, £2 4s.

Hack Flat Handicap, of 15 soys, 1 mile and a distance* — Duchess 1, Waimea 2, Larrikin 3. Little John, Conncillor, Native, Revoke, Queenie, Pukaka, Saffron, and Captain Boynton also ran. The field got away well together, and the first to show out was Duchess, who led them at a merry pace, and was never collared, winning by half a length. Dividend, £22 10s.

Welter Handicap, of 10 soys, about 4 miles. — Piako 1, Madcap 2. Nine others ran. This was the most exciting race of the day, all the horses jumping splendidly until the last round, when the heavy weights and soft ground began to tell on the horses and several came to grief. Piako, who was ridden with excellent judgement, won by a length. Dividend, £4 13s.

Forced Handicap, of 10 soys. — Little John, 1, Mistake 2. Five others ran. Dividend, £2 15s.
