The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, JULY 28, 1888. Our Legislators and the Public Purse
A Wellington paper informs us tbat a number of members of the House of Representatives are bringing pressure to bear on the Government, in order to induce them to re-commission the Hinemoa, for the purpose of taking a party of the Legislature over to Melbourne, in order that they may see the Exhibition at the public expense. We do not for a moment suppose that the Ministry will allow such a scandalous job; bnt the fact of the proposition being made is an additional proof that a good many of our legislators are of opinion that they do us great honor by condescending to sit m Parliament, and that a grateful country ought to be only too happy to pay for all their little conveniences and luxuries. The other day a party of M.H R,s took a trip to Hunterville. The train to that rising township does not run in connection with the train from Wellington, as the ordinary public know to their cost. Considering that members of this distinguished party have the privilege of travelling without payment over all the lines of the colony from one end of the year to the other, it might be supposed that they could afford to pay their own expenses over the 18 miles of road between Marton and Hunterville. But this is by no means the opinion of our legislators. A special train was put on, at tbe public expense of course, and they were triumphantly carried through to Hunterville. Yet we shall probably hear some of them declaiming on the subject of retrenchment when the next election comes on. Who would not be a M.H.R. ?
