Football

(Notes by " Off Side.") In the match against Pahnerston on Saturday the local team showed a wonderful improvement in their play, especially the forwards who played a brilliant game all through, every one of them working like Trojans. I must remind them that it won't do for them to neglect practising as they have the Foxton team to defeat once more before they become the winners of the cup for this season. j A challenge has been sent to the Woodville Club to play them on the 4th of August at Woodville. It is very probable that the second fifteen will journey to Palmerston on the same date to play the Palmerston second. A scratch match will be played on Saturday between teams representing town and country. Players are requested to be on the ground at half past two. In the football match on Tuesday the Native team beat South Canterbury by nine points to nothing. A leading member of the English, football team interviewed at Christchurch criticised the New Zealandersas follows : — " Let me say at once." said the gentleman interviewed, " That there is the making of splendid football teams in the men we have met in our New Zealand tour. But your men want as a whole to get more into the science of passing, instead of doing it by mere main strength. In the scrummage work, too, the men ■work too hard, expending their strength and not using their hands. In fact jou want more scientific play introduced, so as the men would know when to screw the ball out. In attacking they ought to scrummage, and screw the scrummage past the goal when it is opposite the 25. They want to learn to use their feet more, and to try and keep the ball more amongst their forwards. Their first effort should be to get the ball to their own feet, and if they have not got the ball to screw the scrummage."
