(PERUNtTED PRESS ASSOCIATION. I Melbourne, July 11. : In consequence of the reported out* break of cholera at Sumatra, all ports ia that country are to«day proclaimed infected. At the glove contest between Burke and Slavin the Jlarq'ii* of Q'teensberry acted as referee. Sla*in did most of the work, Burke acting principally on the defensive The brig Restless, from Sydney, which was disabled duriag a heary gale, has arrived here safely. The master reports that the force of the hurricane the vessel severly, causing her to leak badly. Subsequently the vessel was thrown on her beam ends, and the masts bad to be cnt away to save her. At one i time there was eight feet of water in the hold. The brig was only kept afloat by the crew working continuously at the ! pumps. I Arthur Daly, solicitor, charged with forging signatures to land transfer applications, has been acquitted. Mr Thomas Bent, leader of the Opposition, met with an accident while entering the House last evening. He slipped, and his head struck a plank. The accident resulted in concussion, of the brain, but he is improving to-day. His motion of a want of confidence lapsed, and the Address-m-Eeply was carried on th« voices. This Day. The sentence of death passed on Michael O'Shea, at the Beech worth assizes, for murdering his son, has been commuted by the Governor. It had been ascertained that accused was not responsible for his action, and medical gentlemen hate reported that he is in' sane. Sydney, July 11. The debate on Mr Buchanan's motion censuring the Speaker of the House was concluded last night, when a division was taken. The motion was negatived by 55 to five. His Excellency the Governor has assented to the Chinese Restriction Bill without prejudice to the Queen's right to disallow the Bill. Hobaet, July 10. The Rimutaka, which arrived this morning, made a fast passage, averagin 337 miles daily. She left the Cape on June 22, at 2 p. m. arriving at 7 a. m. today. She sailed at noon for New Zea« land. She brings 21 Australian and 73 New Zealand passengers. Bbisbank, July 11. The Government have announced that they intend to pursue a vigorous Public Works policy. Adelaide, July 10. The revenue for the financial year just ended has exceeded the expenditure by £1,000,000. This will enable the Goyernment to reduce the dificit existing in June, I>B7, to one million.
