Football

(Notes by " Off Side.") The next cup match, between the Feilding and Palmerston teams will be played at Palmeratou on the 21st July, and on the same date and place the second fifteens of the above teams will also try conclusions. The following players are requested to go in for active training in view of the forthcoming matches with Palmerst on : — First Fifteen — Broughton, Belfit (2), Campbell, Dixon, Fowler, FitzGerald, Hodges, Henry, Iveaou, Keightly (2), Kitchen, Lawton, Manning, Parr, Saywell (2), Smith, and Whisker. Second Fifteen— Bellve, Bennett, Binny, Coleman, Oorkery 2), Foster, Knight, Kewe, Lanoe, Martin, Poad, Eoberts, Taki, Ward, Watts, and Whisker. These are the remarks of Messrs Budd and Vassal, than whom no better authorities on the Rugby football exist : — •♦ Learn the rules, backs, forwards, and erery^ne, and do not talk when playing. What a vast amount of squabbling we might avoid. "In tackling, go at your man straight and low. It is easy to push off a man who comes at your neck. "Kicking off and out should be high rather than low, to enable forwards, by fast following up, either to catch the ball themselves, or to tackle the catcher instantly. " In place kicking it will be found to ensure accuracy to take them at short ranges standing still. A place kicker should have a regular man to place the ball for him who knows his ways. '•The decisions of umpires should always be accepted without demur in public. There is no excuse for infringement of this rule. All disputes should be left to the captains unless they call for evidence." (per united pkess association.) Adklaide, July 10. The football match between the English and Port Adelaide was won by the former by eight goals to seven. Nelson. July 11. The weather was fine to*day for the football match with the Native team, but the ground was very bad. The Maoris won by 9 points to nil.
