John Melliday- and Co., produce and ' com mission merchants, 154 Sussex 1 ■ street, Sydney, report under date 28th • June, 1888:— ' I Butter.— The sudden advance, and ' high prices ruling brought supplies 1 from most unlooked-for quarters, > many of our dairy farmers and storekeepers having potted late in the I spring held for an advance, and have now |literally flooded the market with 1 butter of all grades (except newly . made), the result being that although f the nominal value for best newly made local is Is 9d, its actual market value . is Is 6d to Is 7d, dull with a large i supply and Stocks accumulating ; the consumption having largely decreased, in consequence of the high rates ruling to such an extent that we have never before experienced ; best local supply exceeding demand, nominal value Is 9d; actual Is 6d to Is 7d, very dull. Best newly made imported Is 2d to Is 4d, with good demand; best seconds, 9d to Is ; pastry sorts, 6d upwards-. The supplies attracted to this market from New Zealand, Victoria, and South Australia since we last wrote make up a total of about 7000 kegs at least,: and: forge supplies are reaching ;fche :. market' from our Northern Rivers*— largely making up the winter deficiencies from' the Southern Coastal dairy districts.
