Opening of the German Reichstag
THE EMPEBOR'B SPEECH. By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. (per unitkd pbb&s association.) Behlin, June 25. At the opening of the Beichstag today, the Emperor William promised the introduction of legislation to afford workers further protection, and that an endeavor would be made to equalise the unhealthy social contrasts existing. The Emperor further stated that he would sternly oppose all attempts which might be made to undermine public order, and would endeavor to maintain peace abroad so far as lay in his power. He was far from desirous of using the army in offensive wars, and would uphold tho Austrian - Italian Alliance, regarding it as the foundation of the European equilibrium. In conclud- ' ing his speech, the Emperor said he would carefully cultivate personal friendship with the Czar and friendly relations with Russia. The speech was received with manifestations of great enthusiasm by the Reichstag. June 26. In his speech to the Reichstag yesterday, the Emperor William said he had resolved to pursue the path by which bis grandsire had secured' the confidence of his allies, the love of hia people, and the good- will of those abroad. His love for the army and his relations toward it would never induce him to endanger peace unless forced by an attempt on the Empire or her allies. The ceremony at the opening of the Beichstag was conducted with great pomp. The Emperor's speech created a favorable impression in Vienna. June 27. Both the French and Russian press consider that the Emperor William's speech at the opening of the Beichstag augurs well for the maintenance of peace in Europe.
